Academic Challenges
Prant reflects on the initial months of study, noting that professors often assumed students knew everything. He recalls how instructors would be surprised when questions were asked about topics covered in class, expecting prior knowledge. Despite varied learning schedules, each student’s expertise leaned toward specific areas. The curriculum required constant review, as tutorials focused on topics introduced the day before. This process gradually helped him overcome weaknesses, though it meant sacrificing social time and sleep for academics.
“The first two semesters were a whirlwind. We barely had time to eat, and nights without proper rest became the norm.”
Transportation and Daily Life
The university’s U-pass, costing $170 for eight months, streamlined commuting. Prant praises the service, calling it exceptional for its convenience. He highlights the city’s accessibility for people with disabilities, noting how drivers adjust buses and offer support to those in need. This thoughtful approach contrasts sharply with experiences in his home country.
Missing Home Comforts
Halifax’s food scene lacks the variety of home-cooked meals he once cherished. Prant admits he rarely indulged in pizza, burgers, or fried rice during his first week, relying instead on the city’s limited options. Though he finds the public transportation efficient, the absence of familiar dishes becomes a frequent longing. “On weekends, I try to cook simple meals like dal or rice, but it’s not the same as what I miss,” he says.
Exploring the City
Prant recommends the Waterfront as a must-visit spot, describing it as a vibrant hub where he spent countless afternoons connecting with locals. Hiking trails like Point Pleasant Park and The Bluff Wilderness Trail also offer unique experiences. He emphasizes the city’s charm while acknowledging the sacrifices made for academic pursuits.
